There are two main causes of acne and you should see if the ingredients of the over the counter medicine you’re buying target these causes. These causes are:

1) Excessive oil production (sebum)
2) Dead skin cells combined with sebum that block the hair follicles
*Bacteria causes infection and inflammation

Benzoyl peroxide is considered to be the most effective active ingredient to treat acne. It helps kill bacteria, remove excess oil, and also removes dead skin cells. It can cause dryness, scaling, redness and swelling and sensitivity to UV light.

Salicylic acid helps to avoid clogging of the pores. It can also remove whiteheads and blackheads. It can cause irritation of the skin.

Sulfur and resorcinol are often found together in acne products. The combination can effectively remove dead skin cells and excess oil and remove whiteheads and blackheads. This combination can cause redness and peeling.

Alcohol and acetone are the ingredients used in astringents. It is effective in removing oil and dirt. This combination can cause irritation and even mild burning.

When using acne products that contain the ingredients mentioned above, remember to start with lower strength products. This is the condition your skin to the treatment. If increasing the strength is necessary, be sure to do it gradually.
