Prevention is still better than cure when it comes to sunburns. Sunburn won’t always be evident immediately but could take 12 hours to 24 hours before you see the effects. It can take several weeks to a week before the skin starts to heal.

Even the best and most effective sunburn treatments only help in easing the discomfort. Here’s what you can do if you get sunburn.

You can apply cold compress to the affected areas. A cold bath will also help. Moisturizing the affected area also helps. Use moisturizing creams with aloe and/or hydrocortizone. Avoid sunburn treatment products that contain anesthetics. They are not effective and can irritate your skin.

Resist the urge of breaking the blisters. Breaking the blisters could only interfere with the healing process. And you increase the risk of getting an infection. If you can’t stop touching the blisters, use gauze to cover the affected area.

You can use aspirin or ibuprofen to address inflammation. Aspirin is not recommended for use in children.

Use moisturizing cream when the skin begins to peel.

You may need to consult a doctor for severe cases of sunburn. Severe sunburn is when a very large area of the body is affected, it is accompanied by fever and doesn’t show improvement after a few days.

Avoiding sunburn is still better than treating it. Make sure that you use sunscreen lotion when go out and soak in the sun and stay in shaded areas.
