Over the counter cold remedies can be used by people with high blood pressure but you have to be careful. Decongestants work by constricting the blood vessels resulting in higher blood pressure.
As a general rule, avoid decongestants and other cold remedies that contain the following:
- pseudoemphedrine
- ephedrine
- phenylephrine
- naphazoline
- oxymetazoline
What you can do is to take pain relievers instead like aspiring to take care of fever, sore throat, headache and body aches. For nasal congestion, you can use saline nasal spray to clear the sinuses. You can also use warm water with salt as a gargle to relieve sore throat. Phlegm and mucus can be removed easier if you rink a lot of water or juices. Tea and soup can also help.
A humidifier can help you moisten the air in your home. This can help to ease congestion and coughing. And don’t forget to take lots of rest if you have cold.
