Preventing Alcoholism in Teenagers

If you have a family history of alcoholism, it would only be wise to think twice before drinking alcohol. It can be prevented and the more knowledge you have, the more armed you are to fight alcoholism before it even begins.

In teenagers, intervention in the early stages of drinking is very important to prevent alcoholism. During highs school years, legal or not, drinking increases at a pronounced rate. If left unchecked, drinking in teens could lead to serious problems.

Teens are also general aggressive drivers. Drinking and driving among teens has been proven to be a lethal combination. Alcohol is also found to increase death in teens because of drowning, suicides and homicides. Drinking in teens also increases the likelihood of sex that could be unprotected.

Teenagers are easily influenced by friends, parents and people that they look up to. They can also be very easily influenced by advertisements. Other factors to consider include how early they start drinking alcohol and heredity.

Below are some of signs to look out for in a teenager if you think the teenager may be having a drinking problem:

- Hobbies and interests that use to be fun are no longer noticed
- Eyes are bloodshot, speech is slurred, and short term memory loss
- Changes in friendship, teenager starts hanging out with new set of friends
- Problems in school including lower grades
- Becoming moody and defensive

Preventing alcohol abuse in teenagers starts with the role models exercising moderation in the use of alcohol. Communication between children and parents is very important. The rules must be clearly set and the consequences stated and implemented if the rules are broken. Education can help greatly in preventing alcoholism in teenagers.
