Before we talk about the side effects of minoxidil, let’s first discuss briefly what it is and how it functions.

Minoxidil is a drug intended to help lower blood pressure by relaxing the veins.  Medical people call minoxidil a vasodilator. This simply means that it expands the veins to let blood flow more freely.  It was soon discovered that minoxidil can also help in hair regrowth. It affects the activity of the cells of the hair follicles. It isn’t really clear if the hair growth is caused by the effect of dilation of the veins.

For hair growth promotion, minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp. People with short hair won’t have a hard time doing this. For those with long hair, it can be quite challenging.

Take note that there’s no guarantee that you’ll grow your hair back if you use minoxidil. Even for those who see results, it could take months before you fully enjoy the benefits.

The most widely reported side effects of using minoxidil are flaking of the scalp and irritation. Hair fall when you first use minoxidil also can happen. In some very rare instances, minoxidil users experience itching and rashes. The following side effects very rarely happens but should you experience them when you use minoxidil, get a doctor’s help.

Overuse / overdose  of minoxidil can lead to the following side effects:

It is recommended that you try 2% solution first to see if it helps with hair regrowth. If it doesn’t and you don’t experience any of the extreme side effects mentioned above, you can go ahead and use a 5% solution. Just be careful as if you accidentally apply 5% minoxidil to skin other than your scalp, that skin will probably grow hair.

Not all the products suit everyone alike. It is better to consult a doctor before using such products.

My scalp is very itchy when I use your product. It does however, grow hair, so I would like to continue it’s use. Do you know of any remedy for the itching though?
