Hair does not produce oil. There’s a gland called the sebaceous gland that produces oil (sebum) that goes out to the pores of the scalp.
Here are what you can do to get rid of oily hair:
1) Use a specially formulated shampoo for oily hair daily. You probably won’t find the perfect shampoo for you right away. You will need to do a little trial and error test. Also, don’t use conditioners as they add oil to your hair.
2) Don’t brush or comb your hair too often or too frequently. Brushing or combing your hair can transfer the oil from the brush or comb to your hair. So when you need to brush or comb, avoid the scalp and just comb or brush the hair.
3) If the scalp gets too oily, you can use a mild astringent as a final option.
4) It is better to treat the cause. Try to relax by learning breathing techniques. This helps in the reduction of oil production. Also, birth control pills can induce oil production. You may need to try alternatives.
5) Watch your diet. Eat fruits and vegetables as much as possible to maintain your body’s internal balance.
The following are natural remedies that you can try to get rid of excessively oily hair.
-
Saw palmetto berry (for males)
-
chaste tree berry (for females)
- Atlas and Virginian Cedarwood can be used as astringent to fight oiliness.
- Clary sage is also an effective astringent and is also good for hair loss.
- Nettles
- Tormentil
- Comfrey
- Burdock
Remember that oily scalp is related to oily skin. You must minimize the oil that is secreted out of your pores. Diet and relaxation are probably the best ways to help get rid of oily hair and greasy scalp.

My daughter developed this sticky oily scalp condition shortly after arriving in a foreign country. My research led me to this solution:
Rub TEA TREE OIL (available at health food stores) into the scalp well and leave on for 15-20 min. Shampoo out with a clarifying shampoo. For her the results were miraculous and she was extemely happy/relieved.
Good luck! I know how upset she was and is always extemely clean. Apparently the cause is a fungus infection. Repeat in future if necessary.
