Alcoholism is addiction to alcohol and it doesn’t happen overnight. It happens gradually over time, drinking a little can alter the chemical balance of your brain. You might have noticed that you are less inhibited when you just had a drink or two. Drinking alcohol is pleasurable because of the chemical called dopamine. Dopamine levels increase when you drink alcohol. In the long run, drinking too much alcohol can deplete or increase the chemicals in the brain. Your body will then crave for alcohol to get the good feeling back or to avoid the bad feelings.

There are also several other factors that could lead to alcohol addiction.

Heredity - Some people may be more vulnerable to alcoholism than others. This can be due to genetics.

Emotional State - Stress, anxiety or emotional pain can make people run to alcohol to handle the problem. There are even so called stress hormones that may be related to alcoholism.

Psychological Health - If you are depressed or if you have low self-esteem, you are more likely to be susceptible to alcoholism. If you have a friend or partner who drinks regularly, this could also hasten you to the path of alcoholism. The friend or partner may not even be an alcohol abuser or alcohol dependent.

Society - Advertising is very powerful and it affects us all whether we are conscious of it or not.
