Admitting that there is a problem is the first step in solving the problem. You may be an alcoholic or have problems with alcohol abuse if:
- You drink by yourself or in secrecy.
- You can’t control how much alcohol you consume.
- You can’t remember conversations or promises when you were drunk.
- You regularly drink before, after or during meals. You don’t like this ritual to be interrupted or even questioned.
- Hobbies and interests that you used to find interesting are no longer pleasurable.
- There are times that you feel that you really really need a drink.
- You anticipate your regular drinking schedule and you feel irritable when alcohol is not available.
- You have your alcohol stash in some hidden place in your home, office or your car.
- You order doubles and gulp them all in one shot. Sometimes you intentionally pretend to be intoxicated.
- You are having some legal problems, relationship problems, or other trouble at work or with your finances.
- You develop alcohol tolerance so that it requires more and more alcohol to get you satisfied.
- You experience withdrawal symptoms when you don’t drink.
Alcohol abusers will experience many of the signs and symptoms of alcoholism. The difference is that alcohol abusers, unlike alcohol dependents, do not experience withdrawal symptoms and are do not feel the same compulsion to drink. Those who are alcohol dependents develop a high tolerance for alcohol and can’t control their drinking.
Here are a few questions to help you decide if you have crossed the line of alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence:
- Does drinking make you feel guilty?
- Do you drink just as soon as you get up?
- Do you think that you should cut back on drinking?
- Do you get irritated when people make comments about your drinking?
Positive answers to two or three to the questions above could mean that you probably have an alcohol problem.

In addition to that, sometimes depression is also a symptom.
