We can’t choose our parents so we can’t choose the genes that we inherit. One of the contributing factors to the risk of alcoholism is genetics.

It was also discovered that men are more prone to alcoholism than women.

This may or may not be related to genetics but those who have parents who are alcohol abusers or alcohol dependents tend to be more prone to alcoholism.

Severe emotional pain, depression and anxiety can also contribute to the likelihood of alcoholism. Adults with ADHD are also found to be more susceptible to alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse.
